Mom and Baby Together – Capturing Memories and Creating a Legacy

‘Mom and Baby together’ by Rebecca Connolly, of Rebecca Connolly Photography

When I finish up a newborn session, I am so lucky to go spend time with my own four little ones.  My latest addition is a little girl who is now 13 months old. Two very interesting things happened right around the time of her birth.  I had been planning for her newborn session for months – thinking about the blankets and props that I wanted to use, the poses that I wanted to photograph, and where I was going to put the artwork. I purchased the outfits for my older three kids and thought about how I wanted my husband to hold her.  I was so excited.  Then my oldest daughter asked me a question that totally changed my outlook on the world – she asked “Mum what did you look like when I was born?”

I pulled out her baby book and searched through my photos – I had a few horrible hospital snaps that were taken just after her birth by the delivery room nurse and that was really it.  The rest of the photos were all just of her.  Then the second moment of realization hit …. I needed to be “in” the photos with my new baby.  In fact, I need to be in a lot more photos with ALL of my children.

As mothers, we are usually the ones behind the camera taking the photos – we are diligent with our iPhones or point-and-shoots, capturing lots and lots of fun snaps of our children, but our kids want to see US in the images with them.  So my mission with all of my newborn clients is to encourage the mothers to be in the photos.  Even if you do not think that you look your best, it does not matter – it is about capturing that moment in time when you are holding your newborn baby.  A specialist newborn photographer knows the angles that most flatter a new mother and they aim to capture the bond between you and your baby.

These images are not just for you – they are also for your baby, so that as they grow up they can look back at the photos and see just how tiny they were in your arms, and how much you loved them from the moment they entered into this world.
