Why Hire a Doula? by the National Capital Doulas

The lovely ladies over at National Capital Doulas are celebrating a huge milestone this week: their one year anniversary as a collaborative team! Between the three of them, they have decades of experience and they’ve taken the time to write us an article about all the goodness and advantages that come with deciding to hire a doula. See for yourself!

Why Hire a Doula?

A growing number of expectant women are deciding to hire a doula to support them through labour. This support typically includes a couple of visits during pregnancy, continuous support during labour, and a follow up visit after the baby is born. There are many benefits of having a doula: women are more likely to have a vaginal birth, less likely to use pain medication, less likely to have a cesarean birth, and more likely to have a positive birthing experience.

The National Capital Doula Advantage

is a group of three experienced and certified doulas; Kamerine, Danielle and Amie. We use a collaborative approach to support, meaning that you will meet all three doulas during your pregnancy during our prenatal visits. We cover things like your ideal birth, common interventions and pain medication options, hands-on comfort techniques, infant feeding and newborn care. From the moment you sign with us, we are on call for you. That means that there is always a fresh, well-rested doula ready to come to you when you need support. The on-call doula will meet you at your home or birthing place and give you her full attention.

Doulas and Partners

And don’t worry, partner, we’re there for you too! We know that labour, while exciting, can take a while. We know that you need bathroom breaks, a chance to recharge, stretch your legs, or make last minute phone calls. You can do all of that while we stay by her side. You can be assured that the support she receives will be constant.
Need help remembering that useful technique you learned in childbirth class? We’ll show you. Can’t remember the benefits and risks of that procedure? We’ll talk you through it and suggest good questions to ask your care provider. There is nobody who can replace you, her partner and the person who loves her, but a doula can make you really shine.

Let Us Help You

No matter what happens, we are there for you both and we respect that this is your special day. We are honoured to be invited into your space and will do everything we can to support, encourage, and celebrate the new life you are bringing into the world. And after baby is born and you’re ready to settle in together as a new family, we’ll slide out, with promises to see you soon.

After Baby is Born

The early days with a new baby are a special time and we are available to answer any questions you have. We come to check on you during that first week and if you want more in-home support for those first few days and weeks, we also offer postpartum doula services.

Postpartum Doula Support

Postpartum doula support is perfect for transitioning to life with baby. Whether it’s doing laundry, holding baby so you can shower, making sure there are healthy snacks ready for you to grab, we can help. We can also show you techniques to soothe baby, how to use the baby carrier you have, and help with feeding. Sometimes having the reassurance of an experienced mother who isn’t YOUR mom is nice too. No judgement here.
Doula support, both during labour and after baby is born, can make things easier and give you piece of mind.

“If a doula were a drug, it would be unethical not to use it. ” John H. Kennell, M.D.
